US may ease curbs further on Russian diesel imports

US Energy Secretary Chris Wright said Washington may allow more Russian diesel onto the market, depending on Moscow's conduct. He framed the suspension of US sanctions on Russian diesel exports, announced earlier this month, as an incentive for Moscow to end the war in Ukraine. Under a deal between Trump and Putin, Russia is to export 800,000 metric tons of diesel in October and November, followed by another million tons. Analysts say the volumes are too small to materially lower prices against global demand of about 28 million barrels per day. Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has sharply criticised the deal.

Oleshky truce holds for a second day

A US-brokered local ceasefire in Oleshky, a Russian-occupied city in Ukraine's Kherson region, has held for a second day with no reported violations, both sides say. The truce began at 3 am local time on Tuesday 27 Oct and is scheduled to run until 10.59 pm on Sunday. It was announced by US First Lady Melania Trump on 23 Oct to allow aid into the city, where about 2,000 residents are short of food, water and medicine. Ukrainian lawmaker David Arakhamia called it the biggest de-escalation since 2022.
