Ungated
AI and editorial policy
Our summaries are written by AI from facts that several sources report, then checked before they are published. Every AI-written story says so, right under its summary.
What the AI does, and doesn't
- It writes a short summary, 30 to 60 words, from the facts the sources report, in plain words of its own.
- It only sees facts we have taken from the reports, never the reports themselves, except for openly licensed ones.
- It never sees reports from our "link only" sources.
- It does not report, interview, give opinions or add facts of its own. If the sources don't say it, neither do we.
The models we use
- gpt-oss-120b, run by Groq: writes the summaries, checks each claim against the facts, finds the facts in each report. Under its terms, what we send is not used to train models.
- gpt-oss-20b, run by Groq: finds the facts in each report, checks each claim against the facts. Under its terms, what we send is not used to train models.
These are free services. We pay for no AI, and we only send them facts from news reports, never anything about you.
How each summary is checked
- Facts only: a second model checks every claim against the facts the sources reported. A claim it can't support sends the summary back to be rewritten.
- Our own words: a summary may not share a run of eight or more words with any source, and its headline must differ clearly from theirs.
- People: a summary never names a private individual. Stories about crime, accidents, courts, deaths, health, children or an accusation against a named person get no AI summary at all.
- No duplicates: the same event is never published twice.
A summary that fails a check is never published. The story then appears as a list of links to its sources, with no AI-written text.
Human review
Stories are published automatically after passing our checks; no person reads them first. Stories on sensitive subjects, such as crime, accidents, courts, deaths, health or anything involving children, are shown as links to the sources, without an AI summary. An editor is responsible for everything on Ungated, and any story can be corrected or taken down at any time.
