Congo's health ministry reports 10,060 confirmed Ebola cases and 4,887 deaths since the outbreak was declared in mid-May, with nearly half of confirmed cases fatal. The Bundibugyo strain has spread to 66 health zones in eight provinces, and no approved vaccine or treatment exists for it. Kenya has confirmed nine cases, including two deaths, and Nigeria one case in a Swiss woman who had visited Uganda. Officials say more than 2,600 people have recovered, though the figure is reported by different bodies.
Brazilian Senator Flavio Bolsonaro has left Brazil for the United States, according to two sources close to him, after losing Sunday's presidential election to incumbent Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. He missed a Monday deadline set by the Supreme Court to surrender his passports in a money laundering probe, and police have since cancelled them. Bolsonaro denies wrongdoing in the probe. The US State Department says it will issue visas to him and his family. Argentina says it has no record of him entering its territory, and Brazilian police say no formal record shows he left the country.
Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre spoke by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin on 27 Oct for 90 minutes. The call was held on their own initiative and was not coordinated with European partners, according to Tagesschau. The leaders urged Putin to end the war in Ukraine, and the Kremlin said Putin blamed EU and NATO confrontational policy for prolonging the fighting. The call came before planned peace talks with Russian, Ukrainian and US officials in Abu Dhabi next month. The three leaders agreed to keep direct phone contact.
Two British men aged 24 were charged on Tuesday 27 Oct under the National Security Act over an incident at RAF Fairford in southwest England. Counter-terrorism police say one man is accused of assisting a foreign intelligence service believed to be Iranian, and the other of entering a prohibited place for a purpose prejudicial to the UK. Police were called to the base in the early hours of 27 Sep after a farmer reported men with white vans acting suspiciously. The US withdrew all its B-1 bombers from the base days later. Both men are due at Westminster Magistrates' Court later on Tuesday, and six other people remain on police bail.
