Iran's army spokesman Mohammad Akraminia says the country's military is stronger than when the war with the United States began in late February, and that Tehran will keep the Strait of Hormuz closed until Washington meets its demands. Iran seeks to limit traffic through the strait, which normally carries about one-fifth of global oil consumption. The United States offers a $20 million reward for information on Iran's nuclear programme. Two explosions were reported on Qeshm Island in the strait late on Saturday, and the US military says it shot down a drone over the island. Qatar's Prime Minister says mediators have kept the situation from spiralling.

The White House currently has no press secretary after Katie Zacharia left the position on 16 Oct, five days after starting. White responded on Instagram with a caption indicating he is moving on.

Lynsi Snyder, president and owner of the burger chain In-N-Out, said in an online interview that the company will always be based in California. Snyder has herself moved her family to Tennessee, a step she announced last year, citing difficulty raising children in California. The first In-N-Out restaurant opened in Southern California in 1948. Fortune estimates Snyder's net worth at $7.3 billion. The chain raised its prices after California introduced higher minimum wages for fast-food workers in 2024.

Finland is about to open what would be the world's first permanent disposal facility for nuclear waste, the Onkalo repository. Its operating license was granted last month, after construction began 22 years ago. The site can hold up to 6,500 tonnes of spent nuclear fuel, and its canisters are designed to contain the waste for 100,000 years. The report contrasts this with the United States, where more than 90,000 metric tons of spent fuel sit in temporary storage and $50 billion has been set aside for nuclear waste without a permanent site.
