The US Federal Bureau of Investigation says North Korean state-backed hackers, operating under the name TraderTraitor, stole roughly $6.3 billion in crypto from the exchange Binance on 29 Oct. The FBI says the group is converting most of the funds into Ethereum and may move them through decentralised finance platforms and instant-swap services. Binance says it has set aside more than $6.34 billion to cover the losses and has used company funds to buy tokens that replace about 90 percent of the stolen assets. Major cryptocurrency prices fell sharply on Friday after the hack became known. The FBI has asked exchanges and blockchain analytics firms to block transactions tied to the group's addresses.

The company says investigation content, authentication credentials and session tokens were not compromised. A security incident disclosure was published on Friday at about 5:14 PM ET, and Chainalysis is patching vulnerabilities while working with external experts and large language models for a broader security review. It also notes a rise in AI‑driven cyber attacks across the industry.

Binance, the crypto exchange, says hackers took about $6.3 billion in client assets from internet-connected wallets on Thursday, 30 Oct, in the largest crypto theft on record. The operation took roughly 20 minutes. Binance says it will cover customer losses using its own funds, and about $3 billion has been frozen on-chain with industry partners. Security firms TRM Labs and others link the attack to a North Korea-linked hacking unit. Binance suspended withdrawals after the breach.
