The outbreak has killed 5,376 people, most of them in the Democratic Republic of Congo, while Kenya reported nine infections in October, its first Ebola cases, and Nigeria confirmed a case in a 42‑year‑old Swiss woman. Since May, more than 10,000 individuals have been infected across the region, and the fatality rate exceeds 50%. Clinical trials of the Ervebo vaccine have started targeting the Bundibugyo strain.

Bat Week, a global celebration of bats, runs from 24 Oct to 31 Oct 2026. Bats make up about 20 % of all mammal species. India has 135 documented bat species, seven of them classed as threatened on the IUCN Red List, while 35 more are listed as data deficient or unassessed. Rohit Chakravarty of Bat Conservation International says fewer than 50 researchers in India focus on bats, which he says creates an urgent need for more study. A New Zealand project, Finding Franklin Bats, involves more than 180 volunteers and six staff from local Indigenous communities.

Health authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo report 10,060 Ebola infections and 4,887 deaths since the outbreak was declared in mid-May. Cases have also been confirmed in Kenya, Nigeria and Uganda, with Kenya reporting nine cases and two deaths. At least 2,600 patients have recovered. The outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo strain, for which no approved vaccine or specific treatment exists. Ituri and North Kivu provinces account for most reported cases, and Africa CDC calls it the fastest-growing Ebola outbreak in history.
