Spain's Transport Minister Óscar Puente has resigned following a high-speed train collision near Urda, south of Madrid, on 28 October that killed 69 people and injured around 200. Puente cited two accidents in less than a year, the other a January crash on the same line in Adamuz, Andalusia, that killed 46. The crash involved state-owned Renfe and private operator Iryo, and the government has approved a 30 million euro aid package for victims and relatives. Early parliamentary elections are scheduled for 29 November.

Spain's football federation has fined Barcelona €602 (£503) following a complaint from Atletico Madrid about contact with striker Julian Alvarez. Atletico said Barcelona approached Alvarez without first notifying the club in writing. The sanction was issued under Article 133 of the federation's regulations. Atletico also complained to FIFA, which said it had no jurisdiction over the case. The fine came after Alvarez scored Atletico's winner against Deportivo La Coruna on Saturday, moving his side within two points of LaLiga leaders Barcelona. Alvarez, 26, has apologised for an interview at the 2026 World Cup in which he said he wanted to play for Barcelona. He remains under contract at Atletico until June 2030.

The death toll from the high‑speed train crash outside Urda in Toledo province rises to 69, with 50 people still in hospital. The collision occurred on the Madrid‑Seville line on 23 Oct when a Renfe train struck the rear of a stationary Iryo service, sending several carriages down a ten‑metre embankment. Traffic control had authorised the Renfe train to continue at full speed despite a failed safety system, and a 25‑person forensic team is identifying victims in Toledo. The government has declared three days of national mourning.
