US technology shares fell sharply, with the tech sector dropping 4.2 per cent on Friday and pulling the S&P 500 down 1.8 per cent. The tech sector slid 6.8 per cent in October, its steepest monthly fall since March 2025, though nine of the index's 11 sectors gained and the benchmark ended the month down less than 1 per cent. Disappointing results from Alphabet, Amazon and Intel added to the pressure on the AI trade. BofA Global Research economists call a sustained correction in AI stocks a major risk to the global economy. Tech makes up 38 per cent of the S&P 500.

Americans vote on Tuesday, 3 Nov, in midterm elections that will decide control of both chambers of Congress and 36 governorships. More than 57 million people had already cast ballots by Monday, according to the University of Florida Election Lab, figures sources describe as a record for a non-presidential year. Polls and Republican analysts expect Democrats to take the House and the Senate, while Republicans currently hold 218-214 in the House and 53-47 in the Senate. Polling stations close at different times, so results will arrive gradually overnight. President Donald Trump is not on the ballot and will remain in office regardless of the outcome.
Thirty-six US states will hold gubernatorial elections in the upcoming vote, with Republicans currently governing 26 states and Democrats 24. According to Sabato's Crystal Ball at the University of Virginia, Democrats are favored to keep governorships in Arizona, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Inside Climate News reports Democrats could also take seats from Republicans in Alaska, Iowa and Ohio, with chances in Georgia and Nevada, while Republicans have a strong chance of winning Kansas, now held by a Democrat. Dylan Reed, managing director of Advanced Energy United, says the governor's office is the top state post controlling energy policy and utility bills.
